The Car

 Car 888 - "Where's Wally?"

This magnificent metallic masterpiece is (or was) a 1965 Pontiac Bonneville Ambulance. Coachwork was built by Superior Coaches in Mississippi, USA. According to "Superior, a Complete History" written by Thomas A. McPherson, there were only 256 long wheelbase ambulances and 43 Pontiac short-wheelbase ambulances built in 1965 on Pontiac chassis. Car 888 is a military style ambulance.

The vehicle was originally used by the US Navy at the naval base near Exmouth in Western Australia. It was last licensed there in 1975 and has been garaged for 20 years. It then lay decomposing in an overgrown garden until we found it and started throwing money at it.

Only 32,000 miles are on the clock, but now that it's been reincarnated, it's about to do many many more!!

According to the plate fixed to the glovebox, the Bonneville measures 244.5" (6.21m) in length, 82.0" (2.083 m) in width, 81.2" (2.063 m) in height, and weighs 5,500 lbs (2,475 Kg) empty and 6,700 lbs (3,039 Kg) laden. That's 3 tonnes, folks !!!

For the petrol-heads, she sports a 389 cue in motor (approx 6.4 litres) with a 4-barrell carby and should produce around 325 brake horse power. Transmission is a Turbo 400.

During the course of 1998, prior to the bash event, the Pontiac underwent a number of modifications to improve and ensure its reliability and durability. These included chassis reinforcement, suspension modifications and protection of the undercarriage.

Please bookmark this site. The theme is based on the children's ever-popular character of "Where's Wally?" (in Australia) or "Where's Waldo?" (in USA). There's a giant red and white striped beanie covering most of the car's roof together with a bull-bar formed in the shape of spectacles. The crew of course sport the appropriate costumes too.

Your comments and donations are most welcome.

Here are some picture's of the restoration.

Very sad indeed, but lots of potential!
Dear, dear, lots of metal seems to be missing!
Lots of ballast to stop her getting airborne!
A touch of MIG "Chemotherapy" to cure the cancer once and for all, we hope!
Looking a bit more presentable in underwear!

Magnificent when fully clothed!

Special thanks to Thomas A. McPherson for kindly supplying the facts on our Pontiac.
